Tonight the Michigan State Spartans take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the third-ever Big Ten Championship game. Traditionally, the conference’s champion goes on to make a New Year’s Day appearance in the Rose Bowl yet, with a victory, Ohio State very well could make the BCS National Championship game against likely overall #1 ranked Florida State.
The stakes are high tonight, to say the least. And while victory, conference supremacy, and national acclaim are all important, we should not overlook what is perhaps the biggest prize on the line tonight – some really good beer.
Just as they did last weekend for the UM-OSU game, Michigan Representative Gary Peters and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown are making a friendly wager on the championship game. Having bet on the Wolverines last week, Peters technically owes Brown a six-pack of the seasonal Christmas Ale from Cleveland’s Great Lakes Brewing Company. However, as the Oakland Press reports, the two Democratic politicians have agreed to go double or nothing.
And so, tonight as we watch what is expected to be a hard-fought game between two of the three good teams in the Big Ten this season, think not only of the post-season implications on the line, but of the 144 ounces of locally crafted perfection that lay in the balance.
