There are a lot of people who live in New York City, more than 8.4 million to be exact. One of the first questions I ask when I meet someone new is, “Where are you from originally?” In my experience, most people who live in NYC aren’t born and raised here (respect to those of you who were!). Whenever someone answers that question with “Michigan,” I feel an instant kinship. I want to know what town they’re from, how long they’ve lived in NYC, what their favorite Faygo flavor is, if they’ve ever had Halo Burger, why they moved to NYC, etc. You see, I was born and raised in Michigan for the first 25 years of my life (Flint, what up!) and have lived in NYC for nine years now. As much as I love the five boroughs in the “greatest city in the world,” a big part of my heart still lives in “the mitten.” And, you know what? Most Michiganders, now NYC transplants, feel the same way.
